Developing Your Podcast Idea

You may have a clear idea in your head of all the content for your podcast, how many episodes you’d like, and what guests you’d like to invite on. If you do that’s great, and let’s start recording straight away!

However, 90% of our clients haven’t quite got to that stage, and that’s where our idea development meetings come in…

Assuming you fall into that 90% category there’s a few things to consider. You already know you want a podcast. You know your brand and who you want to talk to. But do you know what you want your listeners to take away from your podcast? Have you thought of a content plan for each episode and how that content will flow though the series? Do you know what’s going to make your podcast stand out from the thousands of others out there? These are all questions (and a lot more!) that we ask as part our ideas development stage.

One thing we always ask our clients is how do you want someone to feel after listening to your podcast?

When we asked actors Sacha Parkinson and Molly Wright this question while we were developing their series The Vagina Monopod, their answer was that they wanted women to understand more about their bodies than they did before they’d pressed play. This allowed us to have a clear goal for the series.

Another thing to consider is what you’d like your call-to-action to be. Or put more simply… What is your reason for wanting a podcast? And there are many different answers to this one. It may simply be brand awareness. It might be that you want to increase your social media following. You may want to encourage your listeners to buy your products or sign up to your mailing list.

The call-to-action and how you want to make your listeners to feel are probably the two most important points to nail at this stage because they will both lead the way in which we produce the content you want, so it’s really useful to keep these two things in mind the whole way through the process.

Every client requires a slightly different level of help in the development stage. With some we’ve got it sorted in ten minutes, others it’s a few sessions before we feel like the idea is rock solid. But usually, we’ll have an initial chat with you about what you want and then go away and come up with some ideas based on what you’ve told us. Then we’ll come back together so you can decide what you like from the ideas we’ve come up with. And that’s where the fun starts… Starting to record your podcast!

Whatever stage you’re at we’re here to support and guide you as much or as little as you need. We tailor our services differently to each of our clients. This definitely isn’t a one size fits all.

So, drop us an email to chat about how we can get your idea off the ground!
